Know Your Customer & Anti-Money Laundering

ATISC places KYC and AML at the centre of responsible trade and investment practice. Our framework provides practical guidance to businesses, NGOs, financial institutions and professional services on identifying customers, verifying beneficial ownership, monitoring transactions and reporting suspicious activity — supporting a transparent and resilient African commercial environment.

KYC — Know Your Customer

Identity verification and due diligence

  • Customer IdentificationVerifying identity of clients, counterparties and beneficial owners using reliable, independent documentation.
  • Customer Due Diligence (CDD)Understanding the nature of the business relationship, source of funds and expected transaction profile.
  • Enhanced Due Diligence (EDD)Additional scrutiny for politically exposed persons, high-risk jurisdictions and complex ownership structures.
  • Ongoing MonitoringContinuous review of transactions and relationships to ensure consistency with the customer profile.

AML — Anti-Money Laundering

Detection, reporting and prevention

  • Risk AssessmentIdentifying money laundering and terrorist financing risks across customers, products, geographies and delivery channels.
  • Transaction MonitoringScreening and monitoring transactions for unusual patterns, structuring, and high-risk activity.
  • Suspicious Activity ReportingReporting suspicious transactions to the relevant authorities in line with applicable requirements.
  • Record Keeping & TrainingMaintaining accurate records and equipping staff with ongoing AML awareness and training.

How AML applies across sectors

Anti-money laundering obligations are not limited to banks. Every organisation that handles funds, value or sensitive information has a role in protecting the integrity of the financial system.

Businesses & Corporates

Commercial organisations face AML exposure through customers, suppliers, agents and cross-border payments. A risk-based programme helps protect reputation and ensure regulatory alignment.

  • Verify counterparties and beneficial owners before onboarding
  • Screen suppliers and agents against sanctions lists
  • Monitor high-value and cross-border transactions
  • Maintain accurate records for statutory periods
  • Report suspicious activity to the relevant authority

NGOs & Non-Profits

Non-profit organisations can be vulnerable to misuse for terrorist financing or money laundering. Strong governance and due diligence protect both the mission and the communities served.

  • Verify donors, partners and beneficiaries
  • Assess terrorist financing and diversion risks
  • Monitor fund flows and field operations
  • Apply enhanced scrutiny to high-risk jurisdictions
  • Report suspicious activity to the relevant authority

Financial Institutions

Banks, payment providers and fintechs are at the front line of AML. A mature compliance programme is essential for correspondent relationships and regulatory standing.

  • Comprehensive KYC onboarding and periodic refresh
  • Real-time transaction monitoring systems
  • Suspicious activity report (SAR) filing
  • Sanctions and PEP screening
  • Ongoing staff training and independent testing

Professional Services

Lawyers, accountants, auditors and consultants often handle client funds and complex structures. Professional bodies increasingly expect formal AML policies.

  • Client due diligence and beneficial ownership checks
  • Source of funds and source of wealth verification
  • Risk-based approach to complex structures
  • Suspicious activity reporting obligations
  • Record keeping and confidentiality alignment

ATISC provides KYC and AML awareness, education and guidance. The Commission does not provide legal advice, statutory investigation or enforcement. Organisations should consult their legal and compliance advisers for obligations specific to their jurisdiction and sector.
